there's something in paris' water. something that triggers the dormant but deadly "DJ" gene. this strand of DNA has the power to kill any club night, and murder the reputation of non-french pretenders. yup, i'm bangin' on about ed again. kavinsky is the ace up the sleeve of ed banger records, not as notorius as his peers daft punk, justice, sebastian and mehdi, but equally dangerous behind the decks. as i mentioned earlier in the week, kavinsky is included on the new GTA soundtrack (which i still haven't played, fucking delay in delivery) so maybe he is finally getting the attention he deserves. he played the last night of coachella this weekend, let's hope for a UK visit soon. "testarossa autodrive" and "wayfarer" are his weapons of choice, and here they are. download: kavinsky - testarossa autodrive
inspired. the only word that adequately describes the naming of portihead's long overdue third album. third. i'm little late to the party, the album was released last month to glowing reviews. it is very good. bit overrated. the trip hop trio have slightly altered their sound opting for an even more chilled vibe, sleepy almost. the building grandeur of the first two LPs is gone however, the epic emotional swells of tracks like "roads" are noticably absent. no, this album is moving in a subtler fashion, beth gibbon's haunting vocals chill the senses in a way very similar to thom york's spooky crooning on radiohead's "nude". download: portishead - machine gun
details have leaked today concerning the soundtrack to gta IV, released tuesday. the full rundown is here but here are a few i'm particularly excited about. + THE BEAT 102.7: kanye west (feat dwele) - flashing lights
after stronger, the best track on west's 3rd album, crusing around liberty city at night to the strains of kanye's synthy masterpiece sounds epic. + ELECTROCHOC: simian mobile disco - tits and acid kavinsky - testarossa overdrive (sebastian remix) justice - waters of nazareth
when i heard gtaIV had an electro station i went "yass", a glaswegian form of approval non-scottish readers might not fully understand. when i read that not only justice, but simian, kavinsky and sebastIAn were all represented my heart leapt. justice must be my single favourite dance act at the moment and with fellow ed banger artists in the mix i think rockstar should be bought a pint for including the mosr exciting electro scene around in it's soundtrack. kavinsky's testarossa overdirve (featured above) is a storming electro gem, in fact i plan on featuring him a little more in depth in an upcoming post. + LIBERTY ROCK RADIO 97.8: david bowie - fascination queen - one vision elton john - street kids
what would gta be without a classic rock station? iggy pop DJ's this channel and compared to the classic rock in the past games, i much prefer the line-up. especially the gay rock entries, queen (above), elton john and the legend that is david bowie. not so sure about the bowie song choice though, of his whole back catalogue, fascination? + RADIO BROKER: LCD soundsystem - get innocuous tom vek - one horse race the rapture - no sex for ben the black keys - strange times
hallelujah, the LCD track is in there (above), i was worried it was just for promotion. the one thing that could put me off this station is the fact that it's MC'd by the annoying-as-fuck juliette lewis (yeah the shitty actress that tried to move into indie rock) thankfully however the licks' track is a remix so it could be bearable, her grating voice on the other hand probably won't be. as well as the modern hip-hop, electro and indie stations other highlights include some nas, aphex twin, count basie, miles davis, fela kuti, R.E.M., metallica, bob marley, marvin gaye and goldfrapp. how long until tuesday?

carrying on their ambition to write the shortest indie tracks around, tokyo police club have finally released an LP proper. after a few EPs fans were asking where the album was, and it has arrived with "elephant shells". clocking in at just 28 minutes, the record is a breezy run through of familiar territory. police club have retained the high octane poppy sound of their EP's and fans will be glad to hear that the hand claps are out in full force. so i'll respect the canadians' love of the brisk and leave it short. 11 tracks, kept the knack. buy it. download: tokyo police club - centennial
yup, time to let the geek in me out for it's monthly stroll. any readers that don't know me personally won't know i'm actually on a video games course at uni. learning to make them doesn't quell the excitement when a big new release is around the corner. and fuck me is this one big. need's no explaination really. and the trailer that's being spammed on TV this week has the single greatest LCD soundsystem track as it's background music. better be in the game, GTA's really have the best soundtracks. seriously i've taken to blasting "get innocuous" on the old ipod when i'm swaggering down the street. makes you feel cool as, trust me. looks like my jaded gamer psyche of late might be dissolving. this tuesday.
i heart zooey deschanel. i covered "she and him" earlier this month, great americana album. here they are on the conan o'brien show, she's so cute when she's nervous. always been a sucker for gorgeous big eyes. bit of a tune aswell.
more fakey 80s. what is this revival? bowie aside it was a shit decade. anyway, M83 have perfected the counterfeighties genre (that's not a real genre, i made it up, they actually call themselves "shoegaze" but i fucking hate shoegaze) in their latest album. french indie is going to be big this year, see:the shoes.
i've been listening to "21" for about 3 weeks now (thankfully managed to get my hands on a leak) and without being in the slightest bit disingeneous and with no exaggeration i can say it's the best album this year. yup, it's better than lightspeed champion, better than vampire weekend, better than blood red shoes, mystery jets have pulled it off. and the new single "two doors down" isn't even one of the best track off of it. it is a great track don't get me wrong, but the album's of such a high standard that it's a tough fight for the limelight. channeling the 80s synth/jaunty guitar sound, the track is supremely produced by erol alkan and the jets' love of mixing up lead signer duties continues. i almost feel guilty for not falling in love with mystery jets earlier, it takes a while sometimes. the videos great too, 80s-rific, saved by the bell anyone?
in other news, thats me back home for summer (mostly) and with all the job applications handed in and an interview today all there is to do is sit and wait. so my songwriting project might finally get recorded and uploaded in the coming week. one tracks down, not sure if i'm happy about the recording quality yet. stay tuned.

a little let down by the second arctic monkeys album (i guess my hopes were a little too high and their play-it-safe approach didn't excite me) the last shadow puppets LP was looked upon with anticipation. the core of the group is monkey's front man alex turner and lesser known rascals front man miles kane. the two share vocal duties on the album and both's penchant for witty-as-fuck lyrics is on full display. many reviewers have noted 50s era influences and bond-like grandeur of the compositions, with stirring strings by owen pallett of final fantasy and charging drum beats. download: the last shadow puppets - the age of the understatement

looks like today's theme is scottish bands, how nice, these guys ain't dull in the silghtest. short and snappy (study, study). franz ferdinand have released this teaser video of new material, the video is titled "under the stage" but i'ts not apparent whether the track goes by this name since franz are literally playing it under a stage. sounds funky. so much for them abandonning the guitars for a synthier album. this new material follows the seven tracks they secretly previewed in the basement of glasgow's admiral bar recently (i've only been there once for an nme after party that featured crystal castles and a lovefoxx (CSS) DJ set. it's a nice lounge.)
my friends have been following this band for some time and no matter how many tracks they'd play me i wasn't impressed. in fact i was quite stubborn in my loathing of frightened rabbit's depressing and boring sound. those friends will no doubt be smirking while reading this paragraph thinking to themselves "i told you so", but sadly friends this is not a "yeah they're actually quite good, you were right" post it's more of a "i was right, 95% of their stuff is shit, but they do have one half decent song" post. that single good track is "modern leper". off of their new record "the midnight organ fight". i'll still testify that the first LP is droning, dull crap, but this tune is actually quite tuneful. i'll admit i've not yet heard the second album in it's entirety so perhaps rabbit have pulled something out of the bag and reinvented themselves since i last heard them, but i'm not holding my breath. i'm continuing to refuse to like a band just because they sing in a scottish accent (ok that was an in joke). download: frightened rabbit - modern leper still no streaming links until i get back home. stay safe.

lupe fiasco premiered the "paris, tokyo" video on sunday. the video carries on the visual style of "superstar", portraying the jet setting celebrity image he's using for "the cool". gone are the pop culture t-shirts and sneakers of the first album, replaced by sharp scarves and expensive watches. lupe has matured both in sound and in style. i'm glad he has chosen the track as his next single, definetely one of the strongest on the album.
in a recent interview lupe confirmed that rap supergroup child rebel soldier would be releasing an alum in late 2008, probably following the glow in the dark tour. the group consists of lupe himself (child) kanye west (rebel) and N.E.R.D.'s pharrel williams (soldier). for the past couple of years, come april/may time, ed banger records showcase their talent on the mixtape "ed rec". the third volume's released 26/5 and features exclusive tracks from the creme de la creme of french dance acts, including new justice, uffie and mehdi, nice. ok so the justice track's a remix but hey it's a justice remix, they fucking love remixing their own shit. it's ed banger's fifth birthday too, and there's a full tour to celebrate both events, in france of course. here's the teaser for the biggest mixtape of the summer: TRACKLISTING : 01. here's the breakdown of the alter ego vol I: i do it for a girl mix released yesterday. if you haven't yet, download it and let your ears have some fun for 20 minutes. best listened to with headphones blasting. well in an ideal world best listened to booming in a dark club but let's not get ahead of yourself. should be posting later tonight about a legitimate mixtape hitting soon, and coming to a dark club near you, unlike my own. heading to dundee tomorrow to get some cramming down for my maths final next week, here we fucking go. so stay posted for some procrastination posts straight from the uni library in the coming week. TRACK #1: datA - aerius light datA was featured earlier in the month for his chromeo remix, "needy girl". seems to be the only shit hot parisian dj around at the moment ed banger haven't snapped up. ok thats an exaggeration but check back later for some news on that very record label. aerius light is crazy. TRACK #2: illo - 4 minutes (stutter mix) pictured with a-trak, canadian DJ illo's remix of madonna's "4 minutes" is ten times better than the original. pretty unknown, illo is touring canada with his crew "the stylusts", yeah shit name i know. when the stuttered vocals of timbaland enter at the end of aerius light and that beat kicks in... TRACK 3: calling in sick - console (renton run squeeze edit) carrying on the intercontinental theme, dance duo calling in sick hail from australia. from what i've been reading about sydney's electro scene recently i'm very fucking jealous of my friends that are there just now for a few months. the version featured is edit by myself. TRACK #4: justice VS webbafied - let there be light new york rapper webbafied has released a free to download LP of him rapping over the justice album. sounds naff but it's actually incredible, especially the track featured. renton run credits for some chopping (chorus sounded better justice only) and some volume work. listen to the original to hear the changes, probably the most mixed track on the tape bar the transitions. also check out sydney sounder for a webbafied interview. TRACK #5: walter meego - girls the somewhat title track of the mix, i simply love this track. there's no other way of saying it, the electro guitar riff, the poppy vox verse, it's incredible. daft punk meets air meets david bowie, gorgeous. walter meego are a chicago group, (chi city/chi town if you're kanye west) and have a record called "almost gold" on sony. buy their record and if they ever come to the UK, go see them! walter meego rock.

so here it is, the first along the waterfall mixtape in all it's glory. coming in at about the 20 minute mark, it's a tentative first step but turn it up loud and a crazy 20 minutes you shall have. fully mixed and in it's entirety, this is alter electro volume I: i do it for a girl. long title i know, but i intend to carry on a series of electro/whateverthefuckelse mixtapes under the "alter electro" umbrella, this being volume I. TRACK LISTING: datA - aerius light (kitsune DJ friendly edit) DJ illos - 4 minutes (stutter mix) calling in sick - console (renton run squeeze edit) justice VS webbafield - let there be light (renton run volume mix) walter meego - girls this is the seamless mixed version, i'll post a track by track version tomorrow along with some exposition on the tracks in the mix. so here it is, enjoy: download: alter electro vol I - i do it for a girl

part of the reason for no post yesterday was that i was still recovering from the night before. glasgow's sub club was taken over by parisian DJ mehdi and you can bet your arse i was there. probably the craziest night since the last time the fool's gold/ed banger crew visited the same club and a-trak tore up the decks, only recent visits to dundee's reading rooms come close. i won't pretend to be able to remember the set-list, because apart from fucking loving it, i can't remember all that much but i do remember mehdi definitely looked liked he was enjoying himself as much as the crowd. too often big name DJs will stand in their booth looking positively bored, churning out a set list that they've probably played 100 times already. mehdi however proved he doesn't get stale. near the end i staggered up to the booth and requested his most commercial track, "i am somebody" and when i talked to him at the end, asking why it didn't get played he replied "it's OLD man!". this is one deck jockey who doesn't rely on old tricks. in all honesty, mehdi was better than a-trak was in the same venue months ago. kanye's ex tour DJ might get all the hype, he might be held aloft as a technical genius but truly, mehdi showed him up.
oscar winners for their work on the film "once", glen hansard and marketa irglova are currently touring as "the swell season". the film's title track "falling slowly" is one of my favourite tracks of last year and i can't wait to see the movie itself on DVD. reminiscent of damien rice, the song is beautiful in it's earthy simplicity, enjoy:
there was a taste of les concerts a emporter in yesterday's vampire weekend post, time to get stuck in. starting in paris 2 years ago, the take away shows are a series of docugigs held out and about in the city centre, the brain child of class french music site la blogotheque. filmed by photographer and promo director vincent moon, he leads bands through the winding parisian streets, any stumbles or unexpected pitfalls making the videos all the more entertaining. and the profile of the artists the series pulls is has been getting increasingly higher. arcade fire, jose gonzalez, beirut, sujfan stevens, cold war kids, guillemots, tapes n tapes and the shins have all taken part in their own "concert a emporter". here's some of the highlights: arcade fire:
i'd been holding off on doing this feature for a couple of days, it just seems that vampire weekend are everywhere just now, but i finally gave up resisting and trying to do something different, well for the day at least. the self titled debut record is a complete revelation. vampire weekend combine keyboard, vocal gymnastics, strings and the best drumming i've heard on an indie album in some time (maybe since bloc party's matt tong was introduced to us). the tracks range from catchy pop tunes like "a punk" and "campus" to sweeping string/piano lead numbers like "walcott". these guys are the opposite of your formulaic indie band, the variety is stunning, one track "cape cod kwassa kwassa" even sounds like old school paul simon. it's one of the only new album's i've heard so far this year that i can listen to fully and repeatedly without skipping or getting bored of any of the tracks. i'll be going to see them (when they come to glasgow's abc next month) and if you get the chance you should too. this really is varied and well structured pop music at i'ts best.
another episode of the now live later... with jools holland show played tonight (i was having a drink with mates when it was on but the wonder of sky+ saved me). it really is the best music show on television just now, legends and exciting new artists in abundance. watching it tonight made me remember a show a couple of years back when the pop blues artist jamie liddell was introduced, he played "multiply" and it gave me shivers, it's a gorgeous song. he's just about to release a new LP so here's the jamie liddel performance from jools that captivated me and some tracks from that new record:
when i first seen MGMT on MTV2 i thought to myself "they'll be popular for a summer and disappear". then i downloaded the album. there's been a bit of a gut reaction i've had of late whenever i see a band being put up on a pedestal when only a couple of tracks have been released, a gut reaction that yells lies! lies! i suppose it could be because a couple of years ago in my oh so impressionable youth i had a habit of getting caught up in these fads, gimmicks had an automatic effect. and MGMT defintely seem gimmicky at first listen. formerly known as "the management", MGMT are a duo from brooklyn, new york and their synthy indie charm has been all the bloody rage recently. too right. the LP is solid and suprisingly varied in terms of musical styles, theres the full on electro synth of "kids" and "time to pretend" mixed with more traditional indie in tracks like "weekend wars" and "the youth", the former being strangely reminiscant of wolfmother of all bands and the latter sounding very much like a ziggy stardust bowie number. watch "kids" below and download two other gems:
at somepoint last year, my uncle was talking about going to see one of his other nephew's bands play a gig. he couldn't remember their name at the time, so i wasn't that bothered. later on however, i found out from my cousin that the band my uncle was talking about was actually 1990s, and that michael mcgaughrin (the drummer) was my cousin's cousin. for a while i tried to figure out if there was an official term for a "cousin's cousin", seeing if this could be some sort of claim to fame, and realised there wasn't, he was as much a stranger to me as anyone else, but it was still pretty cool i thought. i'd only heard a couple of their tracks at the time but i swiftly downloaded the album and liked what i heard. they have the same glasgow art school sound as franz ferdinand, the bands are actually good friends (the franz track "michael" is actually about that cousin's cousin, no lie). strangely though that was the problem, whenever i listened to their music, i couldn't get the franz ferdinand comparisons out of my head, it sounded like the 90s were trying so hard to emulate their mates but never quite getting there. the lyrics don't have the witty edge, the hooks not quite as strong. i know it's an unfair comparison but it's a logical one and one i couldn't get over. decide for yourself.
for a band that share franz' sound and do it with style check out the blood arm. and the glaswegian's themselves seem to agree, when i spotted franz frontman alex kapranos at a blood arm gig supporting we are scientists, he watched the support and left before the main act came on. sorry for being so negative michael, stay safe. download: 1990s - you're supposed to be my friend continue reading...
taking a break from music for a second, say hello to the 1UP show.
it's pretty apparent that every attempt at making a tv show about videogames has been a complete failure. well here in the UK anyway. either the shows are too technical, they focus too much on competitive gaming rather than reviews and previews, or they attempt humour and end up falling flat, resorting to "geek" jokes and using the old stereotype of gamers being overweight wasters that live in their mother's basement.
it's a great relief then that a certain group finally got it right. 1UP.com is already the best website for any videogame related material, their reviews are snappy and to the point, focusing more on describing the game fairly than relying on giving a score out of ten. their staff are the hippest and most in tune of any other gaming website, all of them debunking that gamer stereotype. when they started the 1UP show around three years ago, they found the formula for engaging video game television, except that it has never actually been shown on television.
they take the video podcast model but give it a professional finish to make it more like something you'd find on TV. they use a fly-on-the-wall style, playing out reviews as if we were watching three people just having a heated chat and most of the footage does seem ad libbed (scripting reviews was another big misstep of many VGTV shows). there is also a loose "story line" of each episode, if you can even call it that, a tongue in cheek plot that normally involves a couple of the shows cast (the writers of the 1UP website) trying to achieve some goal or competing with each other. i suppose it's hard to explain and better to just watch an episode (which you can above), but if you're pining for an injection of video game goodness that you don't have to read make sure you check it out. stay safe.

the fact that nme has become nothing more than a selective hype publication was confirmed a month or so ago when they released their lightspeed champion cover story. for years now the magazine has selected an indie hatchling apparently at random and shoved them unrelentingly in our faces. although this custard pie approach has recently helped some deserving bands reach the masses (arctic monkeys, bloc party) there has been a shit load of tripe that nme has pummeled us with over the past couple of years (the wombats, lilly allen, the enemy, i'm loooking at you guys). the UK publishing battle between the nme and the guardian/observer to "find new bands first" has meant that in desperation to get one up on each other, nme has championed some absolutely atrocious bands to the point of absurdity (the guardian you're safe, i love you). during their cover interview with lightspeed champion, nme came close to comparing him to jesus christ, claiming that without dev hynes and the test icicles, that the british music scene today wouldn't be the same. you may have missed my point however under all that bitterness. i'm not saying nme were wrong to get behind hynes, infact the rest of this post is going to lick his arse, the point i was trying to make was that nme lick arses far too vigourously and they lick the arses of many who don't deserve an arse licking. so all of that exposition was a long winded way of saying, yes, lightspeed champion deserves the hype, but maybe not the messiah metaphors that nme are partial to. and maybe the UKs biggest selling music magazine should start picking their champions (get it?) more carefully so that we won't have to endure any more of bands like the fucking wombats. the lightspeed album "falling off the lavender bridge" was released at the end of january to critical acclaim. after listening through the album just once i fell in love with it, not one track is skipable. in truth, the albums is much like arcade fire's "neon bible" in the fact that it's more of a listening experience than a collection of songs. just letting the album play through and pour over you, not noticing when one track ends and another starts, it's best heard with headphones and your eyes shut. the centrepiece of the album is the ten minute long "midnight surprise", the full length video of which is included below. the track reminds me of green day's "jesus of suburbia" in the way that it is actually 3 or 4 ideas rolled into one song, except that it's so much better than their attempt at an epic. another track i love that hasn't been released as a single as of yet is "everyone i know is listening to crunk", it's the best example of hynes' sardonic lyrics on the LP. so yeah, lightspeed champion = super hero, nme = super villain.
the second of the gigs on my radar at abc soon is kimya dawson. like many people, i first heard her music in the wonderful film juno, where she feautured heavily in the soundtdrack. although sounding about 15 when she sings, kimya is a veteran musician, she has 5 solo albums and used to be in a group called moldy peaches, you've probably heard of them. a moldy peaches song is also included in the juno soundtrack, in fact it's one of their songs that juno and bleaker play together in the last scene. kimya's lyrics are full throttle fast and razor sharp witty, managing to be humourous and sweet simultaneously. so check her stuff out, the myspace is above and i've given two of kimya's tracks off the juno soundtrack below, the title track "loose lips" and her moldy peaches offering "anyone else but you". i'm also going to add the cat power track "sea of love" just to round off the juno OST (it really has an outstanding soundtrack) i love this song more than chocolate, honestly i nearly cried when it played in the film (and movies don't make me well up very ofetn, except the lion king obviously). stay safe.
there's a couple of gigs i'm going to at abc soon. it seems a lot of the bigger "scene" bands and artists are starting to play there, as opposed to the academy. so today's features are some of those acts that will soon be gracing the stages of abc 1 and 2, more precisely those i plan to see. carrying on the trend of singers i wouldn't kick out of bed, it's blood red shoes! just back in the UK from a quick jaunt in japan, the boy/girl outfit (just don't compare them to the white stripes) have started their album tour. said album, out april 14th, is titled "box of secrets", and thanks to premature leaking i've heard it and loved it. the singles "i wish i was someone better" and "it's getting boring by the sea" are standouts but it's a shame that one of my favourite tracks hasn't made it on, "how to pass the time".
after seeing her in the hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy and elf (and a brief appearance in the amazing the assasination of jesse james by the overly long title) i've had a bit of a crush on zooey deschanel for a while. with those big blue eyes how the hell couldn't you fancy her? one thing i noticed is that she likes to sing in movies, and she wasn't half bad at it either. that foreshadowing leads to the introduction of she and him, an american band fronted by the afore mentioned zooey and americana poster boy m. ward. bluesy pop is their trademark, their songs catchy and tender. fairly untoured, (perhaps due to zooey's film career), they made a rare appearance at this years SXSW, with a couple more US dates on the way.
the little ditty they play in the video isn't bad but "why do you let me stay here" is the best track i've heard from them. not managed to get a hold of the album yet but the rest of the stuff i've heard is pretty strong too. here it is to download, and download it you should. it's a gem: download: she and him - why do you let me stay here again, the download track is not the one in the video (it's much better). stay safe.

there's a good chance you've already heard this track and love it. if that last sentence is wrong because you've not heard it, fair doos but what the fuck are you doing with your life, if it was wrong because you don't love it then you're a bint. let me explain, the mystery jets (or just "mystery jets" for the anally retentive) are back, and without the old guy this time, with a new album titled "21". their new single (well it was new but i'm a bit late to the party) is "young love" and it feautures folk floozie laura marling who adds some nice harmony in the last chorus, well done her. the song it's self is catchy shit. old news though right? well there's been a dance mix floating around the internet and getting some buzz. dubbed the "shoes" mix, and funnily enough mixed by a group named shoes, who play lots of keyboards. oh and they're french aswell, those baguette munchers sure do like they're electro remixes. so give it a listen, and here's the original and another mystery jets track, "flakes", also off they're new album:
another quick post before bed. been listening to the datA remix of chromeo's "needy girl" all week and it's damn infectious. usually i get sick of a track pretty quickly after repeated listenings on walks with the old ipod but this one's stuck. first heard chromeo after my mate showed me his feature in dj mehdi's "i am somebody" and it's mental video and i've liked everything i've heard since. datA is a fucking remix master, the dirt bass behind the chromeo track brings it to life, but his own stuff is pretty awesome too. he comes from the same parisian electro funk scene as justice and the rest of the edbanger crew, the clique that undoubtedly produced the freshest club music of last year and he's currently touring europe, hopefully arriving in the UK soon. so here's the chromeo remix, datA's own track "aerius light" and a sick justice mash-up just for fun: download: chromeo - needy girl (datA remix) download: datA - aerius light download: justice/destiny's child - lose my waters of nazareth check out datA's myspace at the link above for more. stay safe.
