fad?, no it's MGMT,

when i first seen MGMT on MTV2 i thought to myself "they'll be popular for a summer and disappear". then i downloaded the album.

there's been a bit of a gut reaction i've had of late whenever i see a band being put up on a pedestal when only a couple of tracks have been released, a gut reaction that yells lies! lies! i suppose it could be because a couple of years ago in my oh so impressionable youth i had a habit of getting caught up in these fads, gimmicks had an automatic effect. and MGMT defintely seem gimmicky at first listen. formerly known as "the management", MGMT are a duo from brooklyn, new york and their synthy indie charm has been all the bloody rage recently. too right. the LP is solid and suprisingly varied in terms of musical styles, theres the full on electro synth of "kids" and "time to pretend" mixed with more traditional indie in tracks like "weekend wars" and "the youth", the former being strangely reminiscant of wolfmother of all bands and the latter sounding very much like a ziggy stardust bowie number. watch "kids" below and download two other gems:
